THE ROLE OF NUTRITION IN THE PREVENTION OF LDL OXIDATION: A short-REVIEW

Ιωάννης Δελημάρης

Abstract

Νutritional antioxidants are considered to play a key role in maintaining the physiological functions of the human body. In recent years, the effectiveness of antioxidants contained in the low density lipoprotein (LDL) particles as blocking agents against LDL oxidation has been intensively investigated. However, despite the positive results of studies carried out in cell cultures and animals, the theoretically expected beneficial effect on humans has not been established, since randomized population studies showed a less encouraging clinical picture. The purpose of this study is to elucidate the role of nutritional antioxidants in the inhibition of LDL oxidation, with emphasis on antioxidants naturally found in the LDL particles
