EVALUATION OF THE DIETARY HABITS AND THE BOBY MASS INDEX OF PEOPLE WITH KINETIC DISABILITIES
Abstract
The aim of the present study was to register and to evaluate the dietary habits of people with kinetic disabilities. The survey consisted of two parts, in which participated voluntary 64 subjects aged 16 to 65 years old (mean=37.28±14.04), facing acquired or congenital kinetic disabilities. For the assessment of dietary habits all participants completed a food frequency questionnaire (Aston University-Nutritional Supplement Study, UK), while at the second part of the research 14 of them fulfilled a three-day recording of food consumption. As independent variable for the evaluation of the dietary habits was used the age and also the characteristics of the entire sample were examined. The results of the study did not reveal statistically significant effect of the factor age on the consumption of none of the food groups. The average daily energy intake for the whole sample did not differ from the estimated average requirement (t=0.184 p>.05), but 44% of this energy derived from lipids and only 37% from carbohydrates, while in all food groups the intake was different from the recommend one (p<.05) based on the Mediterranean eating pattern. Moreover, there was a higher consumption of sodium in comparison with the guidelines throughout the sample and lower fiber intake in 85.7% of this. In conclusion, it is reported that the dietary habits of people with kinetic disabilities maybe aggravated in a higher degree their health and thus information and guidance is imposed as part of the rehabilitation program
