The contribution of health care to mental health: A bibliographical review
Abstract
Nowadays, illness and poor health have been effectively dealt with. The disappearance of most of the communicable diseases is a reality. However, new problems some of which derive from earlier ones have appeared. As it is mentioned below, the mental disorder of contemporary people affects almost 7% of the population in developed countries whereas in some of them such as the USA it is considered to be one of the most severe illnesses after cancer. Mental health and behavioral disorders are common and affect more than 25% of people during a period of their lives. Nearly 20% among the patients who are examined by doctors of the primary health care sector are affected by one or more disorders. The cause of the most frequent and severe illnesses which medical science is concerned with (such as mental health) stems from the environmental factors; their prevention and health promotion are based on the intervention in the environment and the control of these factors. Promoting a healthy lifestyle and reducing the factors that result in mental disorders, such as an unstable family environment, abuses and social turbulence as well as supporting stable family life, social cohesion and the development of a person constitute the main points upon which Health Care should be based as far as mental health is concerned
